Old pocket knives are often handed down by family members.

The blade of a pocket knife can loosen from frequent use or normal wear and tear. Pocket knives are used for everything from whittling to cutting meat. Loose blades can pop out of the handle and cause injury. An appropriately tight blade will not move side-to-side when opened. It will not catch on the casing or wiggle when opened or in the locked position. To fix a loose pocket-knife blade, tighten the tension applied to the blade.

Close
  1. 1

Hold the pocket knife in one hand and open it with the other. Carefully grasp the blade between the pad of your thumb and pointer finger. To determine if the blade is loose, gently wiggle it back and forth. Close the knife.

  1. 2

Choose an Allen wrench that matches the size of the pivot screw attaching the blade to the handle. The screw is located on the side of the pocket knife.

  1. 3

Insert the Allen wrench into the pivot screw. Slightly turn the screw to the right. Tighten a pocket knife blade in small increments.

  1. 4

Open the knife and carefully wiggle the blade back and forth. Continue tightening the blade in small increments until it opens smoothly, and no longer moves side-to-side.

  1. 5

Apply knife oil where the blade and pivot screw meet. Make sure to oil both sides of the blade.

  1. 6

Open and close the pocket knife a few times to make sure the oil reaches the pivot-screw washers.

  1. 7

Wipe excess oil from the knife handle and blade with a clean cloth. Close the pocket knife and store it in a safe place.
